UnityList 2019 Update

A whole year since we had a big update like this. Kept you waiting huh?

Once again, we have a whole bunch of new things to show.

NEW

Rounded corners EVERYWHERE

We found previous rounded corners a bit too edgy, so just like every other website we made them even more round, safe and friendly!

New header

“I swear I wasn’t copying github.com” - Sam

At first, the idea was to have a darker header bar just like the sneak peaks shown on our twitter, but this was reconsidered at the last minute to retain its clean look.

Landing Page

Some new fractal background images for your viewing pleasure.

Latest Page

Previously called Home page, now we call it Latest --because it contains all the newest crawled projects.

Explore Page

You’ll see that things have shifted around, things are different and scary. Do not be afraid, this is the future, this is 2019! This page is now less vertical, and makes better use of the space for bigger displays.

We’ve increased the amount of viewable projects from 15 to 16. Now you can see 6.6667% more projects at all times! The categories have been moved to your left, making it easier on the eyes when you want to filter your results. Searchbar is decoupled into it’s own space, is this better? No idea, send your rants to our twitter @UnityList.

Also, we finally implemented Infinite Scrolling! Once you click on Load More, you’ll be able to scroll through thousands of repos with ease. For the convenience, it automatically deactivates the moment you leave the explore page ( e.g. if you visit a project and go back )

Project Page

Many changes here.

Previously all info used to be on the side bar, but for consistency sake we now have a new header bar containing all important information (including creator’s avatar !)

We also renamed “My Collection” button to “Save”, easier on the eyes and makes more sense.

Collections Page

The icon now displays 16 little squares instead of 9, helps you see those big collections. Collection View and Edit now look more polished compared to the awful previous design.

Accessibility Updates ( Minimal Effort™ )

More functionality is now usable through keyboard shortcuts. Including visual indicators for certain elements and underlined links.

It’s not much, but it helps!

Submit Repo Page ( BETA )

That’s right, we brought it back. Check it out on Submit Your Repository.

Minor changes

  • Readable search query urls ( uses a + instead of %20 )
  • A handy scroll-to-top button added which appears after scrolling down
  • New header toast message to bring you random news
  • Some pages take less space because they need less space
  • Website takes more advantage of the screen’s width
  • More compact header for mobile users
  • Many small fixes to UI

Bug fixes

  • Certain images wouldn’t load for certain projects, that’s now fixed
  • Not being able to edit collection without entering a description
  • Explore page’s projects now display updated date instead of creation date
  • Lots of small layout fixes
  • Login now properly redirects to the page you came from
  • Collections url was filtering capital letters out for some dumb reason
  • Crawler is slightly smarter
  • Many micro bug fixes we didn’t keep track of

What’s next?

Remove old projects

We still only crawl repositories but we don’t remove them, this has caused issues for the poor souls who never wanted their repository information to be archived by our site. This feature, to deprecate faulty/deleted repositories was considered from the ground up when UnityList was last rewritten, but we never implemented it.

User tags

Collections don’t really seem to allow users to curate items that well, so we had the idea of implementing user tags. Our crawler isn’t perfect, and may badly categorize certain projects into wrong categories. Thus there’s a need to allow people to curate this. With user tags, users will be able to tag projects with custom categories, and hopefully this new feature could replace existing categories all together. This will be the main focus for our next update.

Featured section

Featured section. We would love to give more visibility to high quality content, assets and websites. Therefore having a page dedicated to providing links to such content would make sense.

Final notes

Thanks for using UnityList, and we hope you have a great 2019!
